Tom Thacker

  • I had been chasing Thacker for a few years, but we were never able to coordinate our schedules. He was driving up to Indy from his home in Cincinnati now and then for Pacers games, but didn’t arrive early enough to record a show beforehand.

Then I got cancer. I found an “alternative” doctor in Cincinnati, where I made several trips, and was able to go to Thacker’s home after one of my appointments and record a show.

He has a unique place in basketball as the only man to have won an NCAA championship (with the University of Cincinnati), an NBA championship (with Boston), an ABA championship (with the Pacers) and even a minor league championship. He wasn’t a scorer, but was a great defensive guard who lent a veteran presence to the Pacers for their first ABA title in 1970. He only played one full season with the Pacers, in 1969-70, and parts of two others, but has maintained a connection with the franchise. Along with coming up for games, he participates in the annual golf outing.

He’s had an eventful career. Therefore, he has stories to tell.

    First aired 2014
