Part 2 of the conversation with Hodges, focusing on his life after Indiana State, and reflections on Larry Bird.
It’s obvious from listening to this that coaching is a tough business, but also that he was in it for all the right reasons. He proved he could win even when he didn’t have Bird on his roster. I remember his trip back to Indiana while coaching Mercer, when his team beat both Butler and Indiana State. Sam Mitchell, then a Pacer, and a former Mercer player, went out to Butler to talk to Hodges’ players, and gave them a grown-up lecture befitting a future NBA coach.
