I talked with Jackson again in another studio in 2014, after his career had ended. By then he was immersed in his family and charitable foundation, and he had a hardened perspective on the joy and pain his football success had brought.
His relationship with his mother and other family members remained strained, and he talked openly of the pressures of being a former NFL player from a family that expected him to support them. But there’s a happy ending. He married into an outstanding family (I went to high school with his in-laws) and he had a son who will be overwhelmed with good examples to follow. So, despite the hard knocks of the NFL – the injuries and the lies – it’s turned out to be a rags (literally) to riches (mostly figuratively) story.
