Jack Butcher

Being the all-time winningest coach in the history of Indiana high school basketball should be enough to warrant an invitation, and Butcher got one. He’s got a classic Hoosier Hysteria story, from childhood on. He was a star player at Loogootee, then at Memphis State, and then returned to coach at Loogootee.

We did this one over the telephone. I had never met him, and he agreed to record this episode reluctantly, but he warmed to the task as we went along. I can’t say I blame him. Some stranger calls and asks for about an hour of your time on the telephone, you’re going to be hesitant. I needed a few more minutes to fill a gap in the story, so called him back a day or two later. He didn’t seem all that excited then, either, but came through again.
