For the coaches, the thrill of victory faded quickly, even before their heads hit their pillows that night. Stallings and Keady had watched videotape of the television replay at their homes, and Weber and Wood watched it Monday morning in the lounge. For analytical eyes feeding on mistakes, it offered a smorgasbord.
“Jesus Christ!” Weber shouted as the video exposed a defensive lapse in the second half.
Keady walked into the room at that moment, coffee cup in hand.
“Horrible!” he said. “We’re just horrible on defense, I’m telling you. I watched this son of a bitch last night until two in the morning …”
“And you vomited,” Weber said.
